Ignition Module : Any module or computer on a vehicle that helps create the spark is called the ignition module. An ignition module can also be considered to be the key receiver computer on infrared key systems such as a Mercedes Benz. The engine computer can also be considered an ignition module if it is used to create the spark. Simple ignition modules take a crank signal and convert into a spark signal for the ignition coil. More complex ignition modules can use knock sensor signals to help self-adjust the timing. Most of the modern ignition modules are part of the engine computer and may require programming.
The ignition module on the ignition switch is designed to read the key and help determine whether or not the key is correct to start the vehicle. These ignition modules do not have anything to do with the ignition system or spark.
All other ignition modules can show signs of problems like a no start condition, lack of power or shutting off while driving. It can be tricky to determine some ignition module problems on some makes and models. Since an ignition module is very important to the vehicle running, getting it diagnosed and replaced should not be delayed.
