Differential : A differential is used to help transfer the power of the engine to the wheels of a vehicle. Differentials are located in the rear end, front axle assembly on 4x4s, or transmissions on front wheel drives. There are several styles of differentials. Posi–trac, limited slip, torsen, and locking are some of the most common types of differentials. A ring n pinion is used to drive the 2 axles to the wheels. A pinion gear is driven by a driveshaft or directly from the transmission to rotate the ring n pinion assembly inside the differential assembly.
A differential is an important part of the drive train on your vehicle. A differential maintenance schedule should be followed to prolog the life of a differential. A differential service should be performed as a preventive maintenance procedure as per recommended by the manufacturer. It is important to use the recommended fluids in a differential.
Differential problems can occur on your vehicle. Fluid leaks such as a pinion seal, differential cover gasket or axle seals are among the top repairs. If a differential is run low on fluid, this can trigger other types of differential problems. Broken pinion gears, ring n pinion, axle bearings, differential clutches or worn gear noise are all problems that a differential can have.
Repairing differentials can be tricky. Seal replacement may require special pullers or presses. Setting up the ring n pinion also requires special measuring tools to properly dial in the recommended tolerances between the gears. Some differentials are just replaced as an assembly, or the entire transmission must be rebuilt just to replace the differential.
