Back in time, auto body repair had thick steel frames and panels and required very heavy duty methods and frame machines to straighten the main auto frames and panels used lots of bondo to bond to the panels, doors, hood, trunk, and fenders to get the car or truck ready for auto painting. The methods were hard and the paint contained lead which is very bad to inhale in large amounts during sanding procedures.
In the 60’s, car manufactures started trying to lighten up the vehicles to try and get more muscle power by using unibody designs. Unibody eliminated the main steel frames in the automobiles which significantly reduced the weight. Unibody is much easer to work with when repairing collision repairs. Unibody cars from this era setup the next eras with a great light duty frame that was still adequate for the job of strengthening the vehicle.
In the 80’s, the Japanese cars started the era with most of the vehicles all unibody and smaller designs to make the cars light weight and better on gas. Chevrolet has issues once again with the latest reports of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco catching on fire. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are complaints of fires breaking out on the engine area of the vehicle while the engine is running and just sitting at a traffic light. In one reported instance, the fire engulfed the vehicle within 5 minutes. At the same time, the 2010 Jeep Wrangler is also facing the same fate with even more reported fires starting in the engine area at traffic lights.
General Motors (GM) has just gone thru a monstrosity of problems with their Chevrolet
Volt. After hours of research and studies between General Motors, US Department of Defense and US Department of Energy, a newly designed steel reinforcement device was created that has passed crash tests and hopefully created an end to General Motor’s problems.
According the Associated Press, both GM and Chrysler are cooperating with NHTSA on the investigations to the fire complaints. GM spokesman Alan Adler said “We are conducting our own investigation and will share any findings with the government”. Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa said “Vehicle fires are very complex and can occur for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with the vehicle itself. Poor maintenance, improper vehicle use or installation of after-market equipment often are causes of vehicle fires.”
On the bright side, no deaths have been reported yet. Both GM and Chrysler are being investigated by the Feds. It is too soon to tell the outcome, but with Chrysler reporting their Jeep Wrangler has exceeded all applicable federal safety standards and has an excellent safety record, hopefully there are no serious injuries in the near future while the Federal agencies and Chrysler sort things out. GM has sold over a quarter of a million Chevrolet Cruzes since 2010. This can be a significant recall in the near future that will put another dampener in General Motors already hurt financial situation due to the declined economy.

Great Advise For Your Transmission Fluid Flush – Should You Get a Transmission Flush or Not
A transmission fluid flush is basically removing all the old worn out fluid and reinstalling in its place new transmission fluid. As time goes by and miles are put on your vehicle, transmission fluid gets worn our. In years past, people would take in their car to an auto repair shop and a transmission service would be performed. This procedure only removes and replaces about 1/3 of the actual fluid inside the transmission leaving about 2/3 of the old transmission fluid still in the transmission. Technology of the modern days have produced a machine specifically designed to replace the transmission fluid more completely and thoroughly. This process is known as a transmission flush. Many of today’s reputable auto repair shops can perform a transmission flush on most cars. Revitalizing your car’s transmission fluid with this flush service will certainly help prolong the life of your transmission.
Transmission Flush Recommendations:
Most cars and trucks that would benefit from a transmission flush should be serviced every 30k miles. Some cars and trucks may go longer at 50k miles. It depends on the year, make and model of your vehicle as well as the types of transmission fluid you have. Some cars and trucks will benefit even more if the transmission filter is changed at the same time as the transmission flush is performed.
Transmission Fluid Recommendations:
There are many different types of transmission fluids used on all of the cars and trucks made to date. It is important to use the proper transmission fluid recommended by the manufacturer or automotive maker. Each type of transmission fluid has specific properties and specifications that must be met for the transmission to properly work. As long as the fluid meets these specifications, it will properly function in the transmission. Using the proper fluid and or additives is absolutely critical for a properly functioning transmission.
When Not to Flush the Transmission:
If the transmission has not been properly maintained, a transmission flush may not be helpful. As a matter of a fact, performing a transmission flush on vehicles that have extremely poor fluid conditions may actually reduce the transmission function causing transmission problems to show. If the transmission is already failing, this is another reason not to flush the transmission. In this situation, the transmission will be doomed if a transmission flush is performed. Thinking that the transmission flush will help a failing transmission is certainly a myth and does not help, only hurts more.
Scheduling a Transmission Flush:
Keep track of your service records. Ask your auto mechanic how and when the transmission flush should be performed. Call or email the auto repair shop and make an appointment to bring in your car for the transmission flush. Make sure the auto repair shop you choose has the ability to work on your type of car and can perform a transmission flush prior to bringing in your vehicle. Evaluate your auto mechanic and your car prior to taking in your car will help you alleviate any problems that may occur prior to a transmission flush.

Keeping Your Old Car or Replacing Your Car This Tax Year Tips
Getting through tax season usually includes making sure your car is going to make it through the year. Some people will fix up there car so it will last another year while others just get another car. Many people may not understand how important this decision may be for the year to come. This decision should not be taken lightly since it will affect the entire year. You should weigh the decision carefully to make the right choice for your car.
Mileage is an important thing to consider for keeping your old car. Not all mileage is the same, you need to consider the type of mileage such as highway and local driving. Highway driving is usually less brutal, but on smaller engines, engine life expectancy is much less when the engine is working hard frequently. It is important to understand the average mileage expectancy for your type of automobile to see what is realistic to expect from yours.
Maintenance for your car over its life is another important factor to consider. In other words, if you have been keeping up with oil changes, fluid flushes, filters, tune-up, tires, brakes, inspections and all auto repairs for the entire time you have owned your car, you may have a positive for keeping your car. Maintenance is very important for keeping your car on the road for a long time. If you do not maintain your car or keep up with your car repairs, cars quickly get ragged out and usually do not last much past the 100,000 mile mark.
Knowing how reliable your auto make is will also help in your decision. There are many auto makers out there, but some auto makers make bad cars. Research your make and model to see what the critics and other auto owners say about driving and owning your type of vehicle. Many people may already know that they have a reliable model car, but it is a fact that some auto makers may put out some great models, and through out some floozies as well. You may not want to hang on to a car with a bad reputation since it is bound to have problems in time.
Inspecting your car or your car to be may be your savior. Whether you are wanting to keep or replace your car, pay and get a quality inspection. Usually these inspections will go off the price of the car or towards the repairs, but may save you on a bad car decision. These inspections should include many points in a checklist to ensure that your entire car is looked at. A reliable and experienced ASE certified mechanic that understands your type of car should do these inspections for you.
This tax season, make sure you take the time to properly access your car before repairing or replacing it. The year will go by a lot smoother with a great choice concerning your car. Do a little research on your car and even get an inspection to help your automotive decision. With a little common sense and good judgment, you can make a choice on your car that will benefit you and your wallet till your next tax check!
