Did you know, Volkswagen was founded by Porsche founder Ferninand Porsche in 1937? In fact, the German automobile company was headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. The Volkswagen mbH “Gezuvor” was the first peoples car designed for the public in 1937. Soon, this car became tha Volkswagen GmbH. In the 1940’s, Volkswagen primarily used slave labor and focused on building military cars and projects until 1945 when the Americans bombed the factory and captured it. The British took over the factory and actually built many cars and sent them to Great Britain and the post war German Post Office. In 1948, Heinrich Norhoff took charge of the dismantled Plant. In 1949, the British Major Ivan Hirst handed the factory over to help the German economy recover. This newly reformed company started building the Type 1 Sedan, Cabriolet, Type 2 vehicles (vans, trucks, and campers) and the Karmann Ghia. In 1949, Volkswagen exported its first cars to the United States. 1955 marked the beginning of Volkswagen of America. By 1955, 1 million Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle cars were sold overall.
The air cooled Volkswagen was not very respected by the American car giants like Ford. These cars were economical way before their time. The small cars became a worldwide hit and by the 1960’s, Volkswagens were everywhere. The 1960’s marked the beginning of the Type 3 and Type 4 faze. The Super Beetle and the Volkswagen Thing were built in the 1970’s. Volkswagen started focusing on the water cooled engines and produced the Caddy Pickup, Golf Cabriolet, Jetta, Passat, Polo, Scirocco and Van. The 1980’s produced the Rabbit and ended the Beetle air cooled cars. The 1990’s focused on redeveloping the designs of all the same models that were selling great all over the world. These cars were all economical, so Volkswagen did not have to downgrade to meet the worldwide emission changes. By the end of the 1990’s, Volkswagen brought back the Volkswagen “New” Beetle.
The 2000’s had many models like the Eos, Fox, Golf, Jetta, New Beetle, Passat and Touareg. Volkswagen AG is one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers. Audi, Bently, Bugatti, Ducati (motorcycles), Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skota and Volkswagen all are part of the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen is a share holder of many other automotive manufacturers of the world as well. Continuing through the 2010’s with many of the same popular models, Volkswagen will be around for a very long time.
There are 2 kinds of Volkswagen owners. One kind loves their Volkswagen and does everything to keep it properly repaired and maintained. The other kind hates their Volkswagen and does little or no upkeep until the car is on its last days, then they get rid of it! There are no in-between Volkswagen owners to speak of. Volkswagens require maintenance and timely repairs to keep them running at their optimum level. Driving a Volkswagen with problems will only cause a chain reaction of more problems to come.
